Mykal Kilgore: A Man Born A Star

Monday, Mykal Kilgore, performed his Atlanta leg of his national tour titled after his debut album, A Man Born Black, at Vinyl Centerstage. In a room tinted in blue and red, filled with faithful fans and friends, many of them incredible artists in their own right, Mykal Kilgore enveloped the audience in love. The opening act, Jasmyne Hinson, who used her sultry voice to lull the room to submission as she serenaded from her project Moon Love, released in 2019, set the mood beautifully. The stage was set and the vibe is right as the recent NAACP Image Award nominee made his way into the stage's light as his bomb ass band, The Black Boys, blazed his opening album tune "When It's This Good". From his opening note, to his closing encore, Kilgore conducted a masterclass in passion, proving himself yet again, to be a singer's singer and an artist's artist. What also was abundantly clear, is that a talent this bright, this big, and this epic was bound to be a star.

To those in musical circles, Mykal Kilgore has been no secret, he has been lighting up stages from concert halls to broadway stages and even as one singing ass flying monkey in the NBC Live Action version of The Wiz. He caught the eye of The View when he, in true musician fashion made a song out of California Congresswoman Maxine Waters' frustrated chant of "Reclaiming My Time" in a hearing. However, the masses have yet to have the privilege of exposure to his incredible gift...yet. Mykal Kilgore is a gem of our time. His voice carries the weight of heavy hitters like his musical inspiration, Donny Hathaway, but has the levity and grace in delivery that can only be described as Black Boy Joy. The songsmith enraptures the room with melody, skill, and craftsmanship.

With A Man Born Black, Mykal delivers a love letter to himself, to his people, and to all who dare to listen. Many times throughout the night, he uplifted the narratives of Black, Queer, Trans, and all people. The musical oracle ended the night with a charge to love, and to allow love to repair our humanity. The world will hear and when they do, they will fall in love.
